The Colegio de Axixic offers a unique Winter Program from January 8th to January 26th.
Only five students a year are accepted in order to ensure that the learning of Spanish and the integration into the local community goes smoothly.
The morning is spent in an informal class where the necessary skills for speaking Spanish are quickly acquired; while the afternoon is filled with cooking classes in Mexican cuisine, practicing your language skills with native speakers as they embroider, fix cars, paint, cook or care for small children. All in all, five hours of each day, 3 in the morning, and 2 in the afternoon are set aside for study and practice; leaving time in the middle of the day for a traditional and leisurely lunch and siesta.
The Sunday before classes begin, you are picked up at the airport and taken to your hotel in the center of the quaint, cobblestoned fishing village and ex-pat resort of Ajijic. The first night you will be on your own to rest up for the next day’s classes. On Monday, we will have breakfast together and walk to the school though the town, so that you can get the ‘lay of the land’. The school is a pleasant 10 minute walk from the center of the town, and you can walk either on the village street or the malecon, which is a traffic-free walkway along the lake, with beautiful views of the mountains, aquatic birds and fishing boats.
From 9 in the morning until 12 noon, we will work to acquire 1000 words of vocabulary in the context of Robert Rodriguez’ classic movie, El Mariachi. Since we learn primarily through our senses of sight and hearing, using the movie makes remembering the words because they are tied to visual clues. By the end of the 4th day you will be speaking Spanish, first haltingly and then more and more smoothly as you learn more words and their pronunciation.
You will have lunch from 12:30 until 1ish and your siesta until 3 pm when you will meet with a native speaker until 5 pm to put into practice your new language skills and basically, “hang out” in the village.
Your evenings are free, although you will have homework to review before you go to sleep, because repetition is the name of the game.
You will expand your vocabulary and improve your pronunciation and speaking ability, by describing the action in the movie; first in the present tense, then the past tense, etc.
The third week is a very special week. You will continue to speak, using the past tenses, for all the persons. You will be able to tell what you did and ask what I did, the most used verb conjugations.
At the same time, during the 3rd week you will have one-on-one time with the lead teacher, in order to fine-tune your language skills, whether it be pronunciation, understanding, or self confidence in the Spanish language. An assistant teacher, who has experience teaching this system, will continue to bring you along in the sequence of skills of talking, listening, and understanding.
During all three weeks, we will have impromptu breaks to visit a French pastry café a 5 minute walk away; a visit to the cemetery, (a beautiful and exotic cultural experience); and maybe kick a soccer ball around or throw a few fast balls on the soccer field around the corner on the lake front.
Ajijic is a very special place to be, and your experience at the Colegio de Axixic is guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience, which will last you a lifetime.
